Aromatherapy is both a science and an art based on the administration of highly concentrated aromatic essential oils, which have been extracted from plants, for their therapeutic effect and to enhance health and wellbeing.
The aroma of the essential oils impacts on the brain and effects emotions and feelings and the chemical components of the essential oils are absorbed into the body during treatment and act in the same way as pharmacological drugs.
There is increasing evidence that aromatherapy can have a positive effect on reducing stress hormones which in high levels, can affect health and wellbeing. This includes impaired immunity, increase in the perception of pain and changes in hormonal processes resulting in physical symptoms.
The therapeutic effect of aromatherapy is achieved by the action of the chemicals in the essential oils, the way the oils are administered (massage) and the impact of the aromas.
Essential oils each have different effects; relaxing, sedating, stimulating, pain-relieving, lowering blood pressure or raising it!
