Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a technique used in traditional Chinese medicine based on a holistic concept involving meridian (energy) lines which convey the body’s life force and link one part of the body to another. Moxibustion is used to stimulate heat and energy along a meridian where the energy is deficient and is used in China to treat over 300 medical conditions.

In Chinese medicine theory, breech positions are thought to arise because there is a deficiency in the energy in the Kidney meridian, which affects the energy of the uterus and the muscle tone of the uterus and baby. This means that the baby is unable to maintain a head-down position. The Bladder meridian is closely linked to the Kidney meridian and also influences uterine function. Therefore, Kidney meridian deficiency can be corrected by stimulating the Bladder meridian. The final acupuncture point on the Bladder meridian, Bladder 67 is the point where the Bladder and Kidney meridians connect, so treatment at this point correct both Bladder and Kidney meridian energy.

Bladder 67 point is said to have a specific function of promoting downwards movement of the baby’s head and combined with the effect on uterine muscle tone, may promote the rotation of a baby from a breech to a head down position. Various studies have reported moxibustion to be up to 60% effective in turning breech babies with no reported adverse effects on mum or baby.

Moxibustion can be used as part of the management of breech presentations, prior to External Cephalic Version and can prevent women from requiring an elective caesarean section, the current routine management of breech presentation.

I will teach you how to use the moxa sticks in your treatment session, and you can then complete an additional 10 – 14 treatments at home.
