Reflexology

Reflexology is the term used to describe the range of therapies in which a small part of the body (hands, feet or ears) is used as a map of the whole body.

The concept of reflexology originates from ancient Chinese, Indian and Egyptian techniques and modern reflexology developed in the late 19th and 20th centuries where observational studies of native American Indians showed that they subconsciously applied pressure to their hands and feet to suppress pain. Further work resulted in the first maps of reflex zones being formulated.  Reflex zone therapy resulted from the further refinement of the reflex zone concept by a German midwife in the 1950’s. Reflex zone therapy is used extensively in German and Swiss midwifery practice.
